M 1858 Smooth Sided Canteen w/ original cover, strap, cork, and pull w/ chain – A “W” is scratched in the Pewter spout very lightly – Note the strap is short and must have been used for Cavalry? – This strap was never shortened at any point and is original as shown – The strap is also marked with some name which I can not make out – Two very small openings in cover on the edge of the canteen – A beautiful example of the 1858 Smooth sided Canteen – No dents are visible

M 1853 .577 Cal. Enfield Bayonet and Scabbard with a Confederate made frog. It is a very similar bayonet to one which appeared in the horse soldiers catalogs (#28) years ago. The scabbard and bayonet, however, are definitely Enfield – On the reverse of this frog is scratched “A. GRAY CO. K 21 MISS” – Please note close-ups showing lead buck shot or buck from buck and ball embedded into the leather – They entered from the back of the frog and not from the front – The bayonet is in very nice condition and again my old eyes can not make out the lettering except for “E and B” – Private Gray was wounded at the Wilderness May 6th 1864. He died of his wounds on May 11th 1864 at the General Hospital at Parkers Store. Parkers Store was on the Plank Road not far from the battle. His records show that he was originally captured May 3rd 1863 and then sent to the prison in 1863.  He was paroled at Fort Delaware and sent to City Point for exchange on May 23rd 1863. He was one of 1141 men paroled and he would return to his regiment the 21st Miss.  His records accompany this piece.  I should say that his records are incorrect in the beginning showing that he died outright in combat, but later his records show he died at Parkers Store from his wounds.

M 1859 Style, U.S. Mfg. for Austrian Socket Bayonet, black leather, w/ two rivet reinforced collar and belt loop – Diamond shaped body to accept Austrian Force Sited Bayonet – The belt loop is in Bridle leather and in excellent condition – The leather itself on the scabbard section is opening up and the threads are appearing – A tough scabbard to find

(Please note that an Austrian Bayonet was inserted only to enable me to stand the bayonet in an upright position to photograph. It is not included with the scabbard. Second of all it isn’t a nice Austrian Bayonet)

$300.00

M 1863-1864 Scabbard only – Riveted Construction with 8 rivets for M 1855 Bayonets – Belt loop in buff leather with very small Ό”  tear – Scabbard section is absolutely beautiful with some small hits – Scabbard tip missing one rivet – Overall a very nice piece and you rarely see these without the bayonet

$250.00

$110.00

.54 Cal Austrian Bayonet – This bayonet is not dug but in my opinion, it was left in the barn too long – The bayonet is in overall solid condition and has the locking ring etc. – It has a dark appearance but would still display well

$95.00

Musical Instruments

4295

Civil War Bass Drum manufactured by Jacob Stewart of Pittsfield, Mass and dated 1862 – It is very rare to find a bass drum form that period in this type of condition – There is rim damage on one side as shown in photo but both heads remain in tact – All ropes and leather adjusters original to drum – Note that someone at one time pasted a list of songs onto the drum body, one of the songs being “Farwell to Whiskey” – Some of the better collections do not have base drums – Quite frankly I don’t know how i would ever ship this drum. It would be a necessity to pick this item up at a Civil War show. – Measures 22 Ύ X 26 ½” – This item requires special handling and shipping or other arrangements made with the purchaser

$1000.00

4359

Single Twist Bugle – Overall length with mouth piece 18 7/8” – I cannot find any markings on this Bugle and believe that it was an import from France – It is most surely period – The cord attached to the Bugle is not correct. The cord is an infantry hat cord that has faded and in my estimation has not been on the Bugle for to many years. Otherwise the patina under the cord would be lighter than the balance of the Bugle – Lots of character and a piece that I’ve had before for a few years
