Relics

ALL DUG BATTLEFIELD RELICS HAVE BEEN RECOVERED FROM PRIVATE

PROPERTY W/ OWNER’S PERMISSION

The items displayed here were dug by me on Sunday May 16th, 1993 at the Battle of the Wilderness. The radiograph

in the lower right corner shows that the Enfield was loaded with two loads, one a Minnie and one a Williams Cleaner 3.

Each grouping was found exactly as they appear and were all found in a 20 X 20 area. Note the number 84 that appeared

on his hat is an officers number and not an enlistedman’s which goes to show you wore what they wanted or had at the time.

Although I have dug many items through the years, this find has a special place in my heart and is not for sale.

This page is still under construction and it should be noted that even though the items are in sequence to battle in some cases, this will not always be the case. Nothing will really be chronologically in order. Most all of these items have been excavated by my wife and me in the past (unless they appear in blue). We are opening boxes that were in storage for some time and we are adding to our web accordingly. Where possible, and within reason, we will attempt to give you as much information, regarding the relics, as possible.

C.W. Confederate Tranter revolver. Found in Black Water, Virginia. Cylinder will turn, all it needs is some oil, and the trigger may work as well. A wonderful and sought after relic of the war. This Tranter was the very first Relic I ever purchased and has been in my personal collection nigh unto too many years. Handle has slight gouges out of it. I try to show as many photographs of the condition as I could. A relic Tranter that was in the ground and completely rusted with no handles, etc., would be 700 - 800 dollars.

Confederate Bayonet commonly called the Tredagar Bayonet. This is incorrect for this style bayonet was made at the Richmond arsenal. I may be wrong but I don’t believe that Tredagar made any bayonets. This bayonet resembles figure B-121 in RM Reilly’s book, American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards. It is marked H.R.-16 and was recovered at Hatcher’s Run, VA. The approx. dimensions are as follows, Socket 2’ 15/16”, Boor .773”which is the size for a .58 Cal. Musket, Overall length 16”, Blade Width 19/32”. Almost a must for any top of the line collection.

.54 Cal. Austrian Lorentz. Bayonet is in very nice condition except up near the point which is still very solid. It is marked by the digger but I can’t make out exactly what it says any longer.

.577 Cal. Enfield. Bayonet Socket in excellent condition as is the first 3” of the bayonet, however, is bent as you can see in the picture. The very tip is broken off. This bayonet had to have taken a hit and could possibly be a combat struck however mommy told me not to make up stories. Marked C-32 for Chancellorsville. I still think it was struck.
